Frequently Asked Questions about EMV Cards (Chip Cards)

What does EMV mean? 
EMVCo, is an organization owned and managed by Master Card and Visa. EMV cards are most frequently referred to as chip cards.
What is the purpose of a chip card? 
Chip-enabled Visa cards are the global standard of fraud protection. Chip cards provide greater fraud protection and global acceptance.
What is a chip card?
A chip card is a card that contains a small embedded chip.

Every time the card is used at a chip-enabled terminal, the embedded chip generates a unique transaction code. This helps prevent stolen data from being fraudulently used.
I have not received a chip card yet. Do I need to apply for one? 
Pacific Crest is in the process of developing the chip card distribution schedule. You will be notified at a later date as to when you should expect your card.
How do I use my card? 
Usage instructions will be included with the card. Also, merchants will be able to assist you with your transactions.
Will all merchants except chip cards? 
Accepting chip cards is at the merchant’s discretion. If a merchant does not switch to a chip-enabled card reader, you will still be able to use your card wherever cards are currently being accepted.
Am I at risk because I don’t have a new chip card? 
No, you are still covered under all the same protections you have always had. Chip cards are intended to help protect merchants and financial institutions.
Will I get a new chip card for my credit card and my debit card?

Pacific Crest is starting with the reissue of credit cards and will reissue debit cards at a later date.
